Elderly urged to Shake the Salt to help
keep their paths clear in winter

Elderly Urged to Sake the SaltElderly and vulnerable people will be able to leave their homes in confidence this winter after a unique salt-gritting scheme was piloted in the Rhondda.

Rhondda 50+ Forum has joined forces with Rhondda Rotary Club to give pensioners containers of special salt to sprinkle over their paths and driveways during icy conditions.

The project, called Shake The Salt, aims to make senior citizens feel less isolated as temperatures tumble. So far, 198 small containers have been distributed following a meeting of the Rhondda 50+ Forum in Ystrad on September 18.

They were donated to the 86 members of the Forum, which covers both the Rhondda Fach and Fawr, who could then hand out a further shaker to a friend.

The hope is to give out similar products for free to thousands of others who struggle to tackle steep paths and outdoor stairwells.

David Lewis, chairman of the Rhondda 50+ Forum said: "It is great to see the Rhondda Rotary and the Rhondda 50+ Forum working together to help older people prevent falls.

"We know that not only do people slip on icy steps and break bones; the fear of slipping on icy paths keeps older people isolated at home during the winter.

"I would like to see this project expanded to reach out to more older people and in more areas in Rhondda Cynon Taff."

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council's Streetcare team were out in force during the winter months gritting the roads and clearing snow from isolated areas. But some pensioners still felt uneasy about leaving their homes - as pathways and steps often remained untreated.

The Rhondda Rotary provided a grant to the Forum to help them buy the first batch of containers.

And Grant Lloyd, sales director of Ezi-Melt in Abercynon, produced the initial salt shakers at cost price.

Tony Lynch, secretary of the Rhondda Rotary, gave the first shaker to Megan Evans at the Rhondda 50+ Forum meeting in Ystrad OAP Hall.

Ezi-Melt in the community

Ezi-Melt has been called to the rescue this winter as Dorset Community Foundation and Peasedown St John Parish Council focuses on surviving winter with Ezi-Melt.

In Dorset, Fire fighters from Dorset Fire and Rescue have been called out to support the latest Community Foundation initiative that is helping the elderly to survive winter.

Offering help for local residents aged over 65 who are struggling to pay their fuel bills this winter, Dorset Community Foundation's 'Surviving Winter Appeal' included the delivery of Ezi-Melt.

In Peasedown St John Parish Council, packs of salt were delivered to each of the 2,700 homes. It was a large logistical exercise carried out by the Parish Council in an attempt to assist residents during icy weather.

Tina Baker, Chief Executive of Dorset Community Foundation says: "Sometimes it's the simple things that can make all the difference, and one of the barriers for many older folk is icy paths and being able to get from their front door to their hospital transport or a lift to the doctors. So this year the Appeal is funding a limited supply of 1-kilogram tubs of Ezi-Melt de-icing salt for use on domestic paths. 1500 tubs will be distributed through Dorset Fire and Rescue and local community groups across the county."

Neil Hopkins, Peasedown St John's designated Snow Warden, commented: "Under the Bath and North East Somerset Council's snow warden scheme we are unable to cover all areas; this delivery is to supplement the scheme and to provide residents with a means of helping themselves. Feedback has been very positive; one resident stated that it was like going back to the last century when the parish actually looked after its residents."

A doorstep defroster, Ezi-Melt is a commercial grade of white marine de-icing salt that is available in domestic containers for treating steps, paths and driveways. The product is the first de-icing salt that is available in an easy-to-hold container and is sold by many leading retailers. It benefits from a flip and pour lid mechanism that can be resealed for later use. Ezi-Melt is easy to store, simple to use and won't leave any dirty residue.

In Peasedown St John Parish Council, they agreed to purchase and distribute a 1kg easy - dispense container of salt to every household within the parish, and within 20 days the exercise was complete. Councillors and staff worked together to achieve this, using wheelbarrows to deliver door-to-door.

This is the third year the Dorset Community Foundation has run the 'Surviving Winter' Appeal and once again it is working at a strategic level to generate extra funding for local charities and community groups who are providing immediate help and assistance to vulnerable older people and those at risk this winter.

2012 saw 21 charities and community groups benefit from support. This enabled these groups to concentrate on meeting the increased demand for their services and provide help and support to people in need.

How to prepare your car for winter months

No driver likes the thought of being caught out by the weather. That's particularly true when faced with a long journey.

Snow and ice causes treacherous driving conditions. Preparation really is everything.

Your number one priority is to make sure that your antifreeze and screen wash are kept topped up during winter months. You also need to keep a supply of de-icer handy. It is great for clearing your windscreens and allowing you to get on the move quickly!

Obviously always check that your wiper blades are in good condition and keep your oil level topped up. Remember that you also need to keep an eye on your car battery. As soon as we get a cold snap, if the battery is showing signs of weakness then it can go flat overnight. You don't want to wake up to a flat battery when you need to get out in a hurry.

It's really important not to forget your lights! Make sure they're all working, as they should be. Don't forgot to replace any broken bulbs, and ensure that all your lights are clean - did you know dirt can prevent them from giving a full glow helping you in the darker conditions?

And, we have a top tip to finish. Pick up an Ezi-Melt car kit and keep it stowed away in your boot for real piece of mind. Even better, make sure all the family has got one, just in case.

Don't get stuck - Get home! You'll soon be on your way with the Ezi-Melt Car Kit!!

Fenland organisations come together to help the most vulnerable get ready for winter

OPERATION GET READY FOR WINTER

Five organisations have teamed up in an initiative to offer advice and support to local residents which will help them prepare for potentially harsh weather conditions this winter. The British Red Cross is working with Fenland District Council, Age UK, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue as well as gritting salt company Ezi-melt, to bring winter tips and materials direct to the doors of locals.

Between 19 and 30 November, teams of volunteers and staff from the participating organisations will be going from door to door during the daytime, throughout the North March Ward. Aiming to reach 500 households, the teams of two will be equipped with information packs filled with advice about how to prepare for severe weather, as well as supplies for those who need them.
Sarah Hall, Red Cross service manager community care for East Anglia, said: "At the Red Cross in the UK we're here to help people cope with crisis when it hits, but we also work with communities to help them be prepared for all sorts of emergencies.

"It's great to be working with other local organisations as winter approaches to make sure people in Fenland are in a position to cope if they face very cold weather, flooding or can't easily leave their homes. We will have supplies such as blankets, hats, gloves, socks, hot water bottles and thermos flasks to distribute if they are needed, and thanks to Ezi-Melt we can also hand out useful packs of gritting salt so that people can clear their paths and driveways of frost or snow.

"We'll be speaking to people about the preparations they have made and letting them know about the organisations they can contact if they need further support. It should provide more vulnerable people with an easy opportunity to get a helping hand."

Grant Lloyd, a Director of Oval Products Limited, the company that is supplying the Ezi-Melt products adds: "One of the most useful things about Ezi-Melt is that it's supplied in easy to carry jars, not heavy sacks so will be of great help to vulnerable households. We're therefore delighted to help the British Red Cross and those that they work with."

Some of the Red Cross's key tips for preparing for winter include:

  • Prepare an emergency kit at home including items like bottled water, ready-to-eat food, a torch and batteries, insurance details, spare medication, spare blankets, warm clothes and toiletries.
  • Compile a list of emergency contact numbers and keep them with you
  • Keep blankets, a torch, a map, jump leads, an ice scraper and de-icer in your car
  • Check on neighbours, family and friends, especially those who live alone, and offer to help them clear their pathways
  • Learn first aid
